Bangladesh, GIZ sign deal to boost renewable energy vocational training

The Technical and Madrasah Education Division (TMED) under the Ministry of Education has signed an implementation agreement with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in Bangladesh to support technical and vocational education and training in the renewable energy sector, aiming to equip the country’s workforce with skills for the sustainable energy industry.

Md Daud Miah, secretary of the Technical and Madrasah Education Division, and Martina Burkard, acting country director of GIZ Bangladesh, signed the agreement in Dhaka yesterday, according to a press release.

The agreement paves the way for the implementation of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training for Renewable Energy (TVET4RE) project, which is being carried out by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The initiative is part of Germany’s broader development cooperation with Bangladesh, following its commitment of €21.77 million in January 2026 to support sustainable development projects.  It also builds on the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the Economic Relations Division on June 11, 2026.

Commenting on the deal, Daud said, “Today’s signing represents more than the formalisation of a project. It reflects the longstanding friendship and strong development partnership between the governments of Bangladesh and Germany.

“For many decades, Germany has been a trusted partner in supporting Bangladesh’s development priorities, particularly in strengthening the TVET sector, promoting sustainable economic development and building institutional capacity.

“We highly value this partnership and the shared commitment to creating better opportunities for our people.”

The TVET4RE project aims to address the growing demand for green skills by translating policy commitments into practical, long-term technical capacity and helping develop a skilled workforce for the renewable energy sector.

The initiative is also aligned with the Bangladesh TVET Implementation Plan 2025-2030 to strengthen institutional integration.

During the ceremony, representatives outlined GIZ’s bilateral development portfolio, highlighting how the TVET4RE and Professional Education in Industrial and Environmental Safety (PRECISE) projects complement each other in promoting green skills, ecological sustainability and economic resilience in Bangladesh.

Among others, Abul Khayer Md Akkas Ali, director general of the Directorate of Technical Education; Shamshur Rahman Khan, additional secretary (Development) of the Technical and Madrasah Education Division; Md Ruhul Amin, chairman of the Bangladesh Technical Education Board; and Jannis Hussain, deputy head of cooperation (first secretary) at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bangladesh, were also present.
