IUB marks National Library Day with focus on AI and research literacy

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) observed National Library Day 2026 on February 5, highlighting the role of libraries in access to knowledge, research literacy and responsible information use, says a press release.

The programme, organised by the IUB Library, included formal addresses, a featured talk, student activities and recognition segments aimed at promoting effective and ethical use of information resources.

A special talk titled From Search to Discovery: How AI Transforms Research was delivered by Dr. Ashraful Islam, Director of the Center for Computational and Data Sciences (CCDS) of IUB. He focused on the growing use of artificial intelligence in research and information discovery.

A pop quiz competition was also held and coordinated by Md. Mubassir Ahsan, Assistant Director, Library Information Technology. Three winners received certificates and book vouchers. Earlier in the day, activities began with a rally in the Bashundhara Residential Area, followed by reflections from the competition winners.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. M. Tamim said, "Knowledge cannot replace imagination. Knowledge is information, known or unknown, and during your undergraduate studies you acquire both. This is why we have a rich library. National Library Day raises awareness of libraries, and IUB has one of the most comprehensive library systems among private universities in Bangladesh. I encourage students to make full use of these resources."

Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Daniel W. Lund said, "Libraries are important places... In Canada, our first encounter was at a community library, federally funded. From an early age, we learned to borrow books, use the Dewey Decimal System, and navigate the library. Libraries are places where knowledge is freedom, the foundation of the future."

In his welcome address, Md. Shahajada Masud Anowarul Haque, Librarian of IUB, said, "National Library Day highlights that libraries are not merely places where books are stored. They are spaces where ideas grow, curiosity is nurtured, and knowledge empowers society... Our goal is not only to provide information but also to help students and faculty navigate these resources effectively and responsibly. We are also proud to be an official member of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).”

The programme concluded with closing remarks by Khurshid Jahan, Deputy Librarian, followed by a cake-cutting segment and lunch.
