10 held over Gazipur ATM booth robbery
The Rapid Action Battalion has detained 10 people on suspicion of their involvement in a robbery at an ATM booth in Gazipur more than one and a half months earlier.
More than Tk 9 lakh and two knives used in committing the crime have been recovered from their possession.
The detainees identified as Habib alias Rubel, Shahadat, Ismail, Shahidul Islam, Farid, Delwar, Ibrahim, Nazrul Islam, Alamgir Hossain and Hasan Mir have confessed to the robbery, Rab officials told The Daily Star.
Tipped off, a team of Rab-1 detained Habib, Shahadat and Ismail at Joydevpur around 11:00pm on Tuesday and Shahidul at Shalna in Gazipur later that night.
Based on the information extracted from them, law enforcers nabbed the other six in the capital's Uttara early yesterday, said Lt Col Tuhin Mohammad Masud, commanding officer of Rab-1.
Some 10 to 12 robbers, equipped with sharp weapons and sticks, on March 3 entered an ATM booth of Dutch-Bangla Bank Ltd beside the Dhaka-Tangail highway when officials of Money Plant, a security company, were loading automated teller machines (ATMs) with cash. They injured the security guard and snatched away Tk 1.74 crore from the company staff.
Police two days later arrested two persons at Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur in connection w
ith the incident. Later, they said the arrestees had admitted to their involvement in the robbery.
