13 die in road crashes

Thirteen people were killed and 28 others injured in road accidents in four districts yesterday and Tuesday.

Our Munshiganj correspondent reports, seven people were killed and 12 others injured as a bus rammed a human-hauler in Nimtali area on Dhaka Mawa highway of Sirajdikhan upazila yesterday.

The deceased were human hauler driver Md Ershad, 35, Rassel Mia, 30, his wife Shima Akther, 25, and his 10-year-old niece Alo, of Hashara village, Madhuri Akther, 18, and Shipra Mondol, 28, of Laxmibilash village, and Alamin, 14, of Chaltipara village.

Following the accident, agitated locals blocked the highway and vandalised several vehicles halting the traffic movement for an hour.

Our staff correspondent from Chittagong reports, Josna Begum, 60, of Pahartali area was killed and a man was injured as a three-wheeler hit them while they were crossing the road in the Hajji Camp area of the city.

Our Jamalpur correspondent reports: a woman was killed as she was hit by a motorcycle on Islampur-Jhagrarchar road in Porarchar Pashchimpara village under Islampur upazila.

The deceased was identified as  Sufia Begum, 50, of the village.

Our Gazipur correspondent adds, a freedom fighter and a college student were killed in two separate accidents, which occurred in Tongi Government College area several hours apart yesterday.

Freedom fighter Gopal Chandra Paul, 70, a resident of Shibpur upazila in Narsingdi was run over by a speeding bus in the afternoon.

He was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

A student of Notre Dame College, died after being run over by a bus while he was crossing Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in the same area in the morning.

The victim, Jakir Hossain, 18, lived in Brahmanbaria.

In Kaliakoir upazila, a driver was killed and 15 passengers were injured in a head-on collision between two buses on Dhaka-Tangail highway in front of Bengal Pencil Factory in Nishchintapur.

On Tuesday, Ahsan Ullah Sarker, 55, a former UP member of Bhawal Mirzapur in Gazipur was killed when a truck rammed his car on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Bhabanipur Bazar of the district.
