3 killed, 9 hurt in road crashes
At least three people were killed and nine were injured in road accidents in two districts in the last two days, according to reports from our correspondents.
In Barishal, two madrasa students were killed and nine were injured after rickshaw-van carrying them plunged into a roadside canal in Mulpain area of Ujirpur upazila yesterday.
All of them were students of Mulpain Darus Sunnat Madrasa of the upazila.
The deceased are Lamia Aktar, 7, daughter of Joynal Abedin from Mulpain, and Abdullah Hawladar, 8, son of Selim Hawladar from Sakrail village of the upazila.
Ujirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shishir Kumar Paul said the rickshaw-van was going to the madrasa. On the way, the puller lost control and plunged into the canal around 7am.
Locals rushed to the spot, rescued and admitted the children to a local upazila health complex.
Dr Maksudur Rahman, the on-duty medical officer at the health complex, said two victims died before reaching the hospital and nine others are being treated there.
The severely injured patients would be sent to Barishal’s Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, Dr Maksudur added.
The driver could not be found after the accident, and police are investigating the matter.
In Panchagarh, an elderly man was killed after a pick-up hit him at Buraburi bazar on Panchagarh-Banglabandha highway in Tentulia upazila on Monday.
The deceased is identified as Nashidul Islam, 65, from Narayangach village of the upazila.
Tentulia Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Hel Baki said the accident occurred around 6:30pm when the man was crossing the road. He died on the spot.
Locals intercepted the pick-up van, and police later arrested the driver and seized the vehicle.
