30 hurt as B'baria traders, madrasa students clash

At least 30 people, including 15 cops, were injured last night as police tried to quell a clash between madrasa students and traders in Brahmanbaria which ensued following an argument over the price of a cellphone.

A student of Jamia Islami Madrasa went to a shop in the Zila Parishad Market to buy the cellphone and the argument with the shop owner turned into a scuffle, Brahmanbaria Police Station Office-in-Charge Akul Chandra Biswas told The Daily Star.

Later, 50-60 madrasa students arrived and ransacked the shop, leading to the clash, he said.

He said over 100 blanks and teargas canisters were fired while cocktail explosions were heard before the situation was brought under control around 9:00pm. At least 15 cops were injured, he added.

No case was filed till filing of this report around 1:00am today.
