BNP's Bodi denied bail in Savar

The High Court yesterday denied bail to Bodiuzzaman Bodi, pro-BNP mayoral candidate for Savar municipality election, in a violence case.

The bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice JBM Hassan rejected a petition filed by Bodiuzzaman seeking anticipatory bail in the case, considering that it was not properly placed before it.

Bodiuzzaman's lawyer M Masud Rana told The Daily Star that the case was filed against his client after violence took place in Savar during BNP-led alliance's agitation on January 5 this year.

Bodiuzzaman sought anticipatory bail in the case as he did not know about the case earlier but the HC denied him bail as police had already submitted the charge sheet in the case, he farther said.

Replying to a question, Masud said there is no legal bar to his client's contesting the upcoming election which is scheduled for December 30.

Police cannot arrest him without any arrest warrant from the court, the lawyer added.
