EC commissioners should quit, Shujan demands

Reflecting on the "poor performance" during the recent union parishad elections, a civil society platform today demanded that Election Commissioners "should quit".

Claiming these commissioners were a failure, Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) claimed that the incumbent Election Commission is the main obstacle for holding a fair election.

The demand was placed forth by Prof Badiul Alam Majumdar, secretary of Shujan, a monitoring body on good governance, at a press briefing in Dhaka Reporters Unity this morning.

Bangladesh entered union parishad elections in March 22. Polls will be held through all union parishads in six phases. Till now, two of the phases have been completed.

At least 20 people lost their lives in polls violence during the two phases.

During today's press conference, Prof Majumdar opined that: "If the elections were not held in partisan manner, there would have been less violence."

The present EC proved that may be it is not possible to hold fair elections under a partisan government, he said.
