Ershad decries lack of rule of law blocking Dhaka thoroughfare

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad yesterday said the government has completely failed to ensure people's safety as there is no rule of law in the country.

"There is neither democracy nor good governance in the country," said Ershad, also a special envoy to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He was addressing a human chain organised by Jatiya Party in front of Jatiya Press Club in the capital.

While going to the venue from his Baridhara residence, Ershad was seen moving through the city in a mini-truck and exchanging views with his supporters.

At the human chain, Ershad said the government should take responsibility for the recent incidents of abuse and murders of children and women in different parts of the country.     

"The government has failed to ensure security of women and children in the country. Criminals are committing crimes freely as a culture of impunity is prevailing. That is why we have come to the streets; there is no politics behind our move," he said.
