Unb, Dhaka

Green activists at a discussion yesterday stressed environment-friendly agriculture to ensure food security in the country.

It is time to think of ensuring standard of food apart from boosting its production, they told the discussion organised by Poribesh Bachao Andolon, marking World Food Day.

They said indiscriminate use of chemical fertilisers and pesticide in agriculture, use of underground water and introduction genetically modified crops contribute to rapid deterioration of soil and water quality.

Poba executive general secretary Abdus Sobhan chaired the discussion.

They put forward a five-point demand including effective implementation of the Safe Food Act 2013 and a ban on chemical fertilisers, which pose a threat to human health.
