Heavy rain submerges Sylhet city

Many areas of Sylhet city are waterlogged due to yesterday's downpour.

The rainfall started around 5:00am and continued till afternoon. City's Amberkhana to Eidgah road and Subidbazar to Madina Market road are completely submerged after an hour of raining, said residents.

Around 50 other low lying areas are also waterlogged due to vulnerable sewerage system, they added.

"My daughters missed their schools. It was impossible to walk or find any vehicles," said MJ Farhana, a housewife of Shamimabad Residential Area.

Over the years, waterlogging and sewerage problem have become a severe issue in the city. Many important canals have been occupied either by locals or dumping of waste.

According to the civic body, Sylhet City Corporation ran several operations to stop encroaching and cleaning of the canals, over the years.

But linking canals to Surma is not done yet, said locals.

Moreover, heavy rainfall resulted in frequent load-shedding. Beanibazar, Companiganj, Balaganj, Biswanath and many other upazilas are also facing this crisis, they added.

"The sewerage system is being developed, though some areas are still waterlogged. We are trying our level best, but if it rains too much, naturally there will be problems," said Enamul Habib, chief executive officer of SCC.

Sylhet Weather Department office said the rainfall will continue for a couple of days.
