Integrated steps must to stop violence against women
Integrated steps need to be taken by all sections of the society to stop violence against women, speakers said at a roundtable in Jamalpur town yesterday.
The roundtable on "From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Make Education Safe for All" was organised by The Daily Star in association with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The speakers suggested forming committees comprising women to check such crimes in their localities.
Families should instill respect for women and girls in children and teach them to protest violence against them, they said, adding that violence against women could be eliminated if females are viewed to be contributing to the country's development.
Local lawmaker Rezaul Karim Hira attended the roundtable as the chief guest while Abdullah-al-Mamun, additional deputy commissioner (revenue), presided over the event.
Renowned physician from Chittagong Medical College, Nilufar Kamorez Jaha, an expert on reproductive and public health, moderated the programme. Additional Superintendent of Police Shariful Haque presented the keynote speech.
Aklima Jesmin, gender officer of United Nations Population Fund; Niranjan Bandhu Dam, deputy director at the Department of Family Planning; and local NGO officials Sajjad Ansary and Jahangir Salim, among others, addressed the event.
Students from different schools and colleges also attended the programme.
