Road accidents leave five dead, two injured
Five people were killed and two injured in road accidents in four districts during the last two days, according to reports from our correspondents.
In Gazipur, a pickup hit a damaged truck parked on a road in the city’s Nanduain area yesterday, killing the pickup driver and two of his helpers.
Police could not ascertain the identities of the deceased immediately.
Witnesses said the accident might have occurred at 7:45am as the Maona-bound pickup driver could not sense that the truck remained parked in front of it.
In Barishal, an on-duty traffic police sergeant was critically injured after being hit by a covered van on Barishal-Patuakhali highway near Barishal University.
Golam Kibria, a traffic sergeant of Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP), was admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, said Abudul Malek, duty officer at Bandar Police Station.
Witnesses said the covered van ignored the police officer’s signal to stop.
The covered van was seized and the driver Abdul Jalil was arrested in Nalchhity area of Jhalakati, said police.
In Bagerhat, a truck driver was killed and his helper injured as the vehicle hit a tree beside Khulna-Mawa highway in Mulghar area of Fakirhat yesterday.
The driver, Kamal, was from Nurnagar area of Khulna city. His helper, Shamim, from the city’s Tutpara area, was taken to a local hospital, said fire service.
The accident took place as the driver lost control over the steering.
Masud Sardar, deputy assistant director of Bagerhat Fire Station, said the Barishal-bound truck loaded with electric items was coming from Mongla.
In Tangail, Alauddin Al Azad, 55, upazila family planning officer, was killed as a goods-laden truck ran him over on Dhaka-Tangail highway in Ashekpur Bypass area of Sadar upazila on Sunday night.
The deceased was from Elasin village in Nagarpur upazila of the district, said police.
Police were trying to seize the truck and its driver, they said.
