When a municipality fails its people
Thana Road in Savar Municipality has become an accident-prone area recently, with holes dug for repair of the sewerage system lurking every few metres apart. At least seven mishaps took place on the road in the last few months, but none died, said Sahab Ali, owner of a medicine store in the area. On December 9, a five-year-old boy fell into one. This photographer saw around a hundred such holes along the road. Locals said the municipality was neglecting the risks even if some fatal incidents like the death of four-year-old boy Jihad in an open well in the capital occurred in recent times. Chief Engineer of Savar Municipality Md Shohirul Islam, however, said they asked the contractors to complete their work and cover the holes immediately; otherwise they would face action.
