1 killed, 2 hurt as engine of oil tanker explodes

A worker of a ship was killed and two others sustained burn injuries as engine of a small oil tanker exploded in Karnaphuli area under Paitya upazila yesterday.

The dead, Joynal Abedin, 25, and the injured, Akhter Kamal,24, and Alamgir Hossain, 26, were workers of oil tanker-- OT Tasvir-3.

Police said the oil tanker's engine was being repaired at Matobborghat near Moizzartek under Karnaphuli Police Station.

All of a sudden, a fire erupted from the engine and it exploded at around 2:30am. The three, who were working on the engine during the time, sustained burn injuries.

They were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said Md Harun, a colleague of the injured.

Joynal died there.

The fire was doused within half an hour, said Mizanur Rahman, sub-inspector of Karnaphuli Police Station.
