2 smugglers held after gunfight with cops

Law enforcers arrested two drug smugglers after a 'gunfight' with a gang of drug smugglers at Champatoli village in Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat district early yesterday.

The arrestees are, Sajal Hossain, 35, son of Akkas Ali of Biswaspara area in the upazila headquarters, and his cohort Prince, 29.

Sajal, received bullets in his both legs and is now undergoing treatment at Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

Police also seized 25 bottles of Phensidyl and a number of sharp weapons from the spot.

Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, officer-in-charge of Panchbibi Police Station, said a police team, acting on a tip-off, raided the bordering village around 4:00am when a gang of 22/25 drug smugglers were taking preparation to supply smuggled drugs to different parts of the country.

Sensing the presence of the police team, the smugglers fired several gunshots, prompting the law enforces to retaliate, the OC added.

After the gunfight, police arrested bullet-hit Sajal, an accused in at least 12 cases filed with the police station, and his cohort Prince from the spot.
