75 more BNP-Jamaat men held in 5 districts

At least 75 BNP and Jamaat-Shibir men were held in Nilphamari, Satkhira, Thakurgaon, Jhenidah and Sylhet districts yesterday and the day before.

Police in separate drives arrested 20 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir in six upazilas of Nilphamari on Wednesday night, reports our correspondent.

Of the arrestees, six are from Sadar upazila, five from Jaldhaka upazila, one from Dimla upazila, one from Domar upazila, three from Kishoreganj upazila and four others from Saidpur upazila.

They were arrested in different cases, said Superintendent of Police Zakir Hossain.

In Satkhira, a joint force arrested 27 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat-Shibir in different places of the district in the last two days, reports UNB.

Enamul Haque, sub-inspector of Satkhira Special Branch, said a team of joint force, comprising police, Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh, conducted separate drives in eight upazilas of the district and arrested the 27 people on sabotage charges.

Away in Thakurgaon, at least 20 BNP-Jamaat men were arrested at different spots in the district early yesterday.

The arrestees include convener of Union Jubo Dal Israfil Azad and Jamaat leader Ziru Mohammad, reports our correspondent.

They were arrested on charge of planning subversive activities in the area, said Superintendent of Police Farhad Ahmed.

According to our Jhenidah correspondent, police in separate drives arrested seven Jamaat-shibir men in four upazilas of the district in the last two days.

Of the arrestees, three are from Sadar upazila, one from Shailakupa upazila, two from Harinakundo upazila and one from Kaliganj upazila.

They were held on charge of planning subversive activities in the areas, said Assistant Superintendent of Police Ajbahar Ali Sheikh.

The arrestees were sent to jail yesterday, said the ASP.

In Sylhet, police arrested Jamaat-e-Islami district (South) unit General Secretary Maulana Lokman Ahmad on various charges from his house in South Surma upazila early yesterday.

Officer-in-Charge Ataur Rahman of South Surma Police Station said law enforcers, acting on a tip-off, raided the house of Maulana Lokman, also former chairman of the upazila parishad, in the area and arrested him at around 3:00am.

He was wanted in several cases, the OC added.
