A member of a criminal gang was arrested after a 'gunfight' between police and his cohorts at Mirganj village in Sadar upazila in the district early yesterday.

He was identified as Abu Zafar Rana, son of Nur Nabi Khokan, a resident of Shyampur village in Ramganj upazila.

Three police constables -- Bahar Uddin, Abdul Kashem and Tuhin -- were also injured in the gunfight.

Nasim Miah, assistant superintendent of police (ASP), said police, acting on a tip-off, conducted a drive at Mirganj village where Rana and other members of the gang were staying.

Sensing the presence of the policemen, Rana and his cohorts opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate. Rana and three policemen received bullet wounds during the 'gunfight.'

Later, police arrested Rana while other members of the gang managed to escape. They also seized one gun and three bullets from the spot.
