Man detained over slaughtering horse in Dinajpur
A man was detained in connection with slaughtering a horse and selling its meat among the villagers in Biral upazila of Dinajpur today, police said.
Md Raihan Mia, a resident of Kazipara village in Biral, was detained around 12noon today, our Dinajpur correspondent reports.
According to the locals, Md Kayum Ali, a log trader, slaughtered a horse, belonged to him, after being influenced by Shafiqul Islam, an assistant teacher of Kazipara High School.
Kayum slaughtered it in his house in the morning in presence of his younger brother Raihan and Shafiqul. After keeping sufficient meat for themselves, they sold the rest to the villagers at Tk 200 per kilogram, Golam Rasul, officer-in-charge of Biral Police Station, said quoting the villagers.
On information, police raided the village and detained Raihan and seized two kilogrammes of meat, the OC said.
Both Kayum and Shafiqul went into hiding before police raided there, he said adding legal action will be taken against the offenders for slaughtering the horse.
ABM Rawshan Kabir, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Biral said that the law prohibits slaughtering of horses in the country.
According to the Animals Slaughter (Restriction) and Meat Control Act, 1957, slaughtering of horses is prohibited in Bangladesh.
