Municipality, village declared free from drug, robbery
Akkelpur municipality and Gopinathpur village in Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat district have been declared free from drug trading, robbery, mugging and stealing.
Superintendent of Police Mollah Nazrul Islam came up with the declaration at a programme organised by his department on Tuesday.
As chief guest District and Sessions Judge KM Julfikar Ali attended the programme addressed by Deputy Commissioner Md Abdur Rahim, Chief Judicial Magistrate Ismat Ara and OC of Akkelpur Police Station Ashraful Islam.
Under the slogan 'Hate drug, not addicts and traders', over four thousand people gathered at the rally held at the playground of Mojibur Rahman Degree College, said locals.
At least 72 illegal drug traders of the municipality area surrendered at the programme and promised not to continue such business further. Similar number of addicts also promised to give up their bad habit from now. Besides, 23 robbers and burglars also surrendered at the venue.
Later, the chief guest distributed 38 sewing machine sets and 33 auto-rickshaws among them as part of rehabilitation programme so that they can stay away from such illegal drug trading.
The SP also urged the locals to keep informing if any stealing, robbery, and drug trading incident is reported in the areas.
