Newly elected UP chairman hacked in Jessore
A newly elected union parishad (UP) chairman was hacked by a gang of criminals at Alamdangapar in Jhikargachha upazila of Jessore district on Monday night.
The victim is as Nesar Uddin, 50, chairman-elect of Shangkarpur Union Parishad under the upazila.
Villagers said a gang of criminals led by one Ariful intercepted Nesar Uddin's motorbike when he along with two others was going to Ulakal village from Naira area in the upazila at around 9:00pm.
At one stage, the attackers hacked Nesar with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured. Locals took him to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.
Mollah Khabiruddin, officer-in-charge of Jhikargachha Police Station, said a case was filed with the police station. None was arrested in connection with the attack on chairman as of 5:00pm yesterday.
Away in Manikganj, the Election Commission (EC) postponed the elections to Garpara and Jagir union parishads under Manikganj Sadar upazila following complaints by two chairman aspirants about snatching of their nomination papers, reports our correspondent.
Farhad Ahmed Khan, deputy secretary at the EC, sent the office order to the district election officer and the returning officers concerned. The elections in the unions were scheduled to be held on May 28.
On April 27, ruling party men allegedly snatched nomination papers from BNP-nominated chairman candidates Mohammad Selim Hossain of Jagir union, and independent candidate Sohrab Hossain of Garpara union.
SA Zinah Kabir, organising secretary of Manikganj district unit of BNP, and the two candidates filed the complaints to the chief election commissioner, secretary of the EC, deputy commissioner of Manikganj, superintendent of police of Manikganj, district election officer and the returning officers concerned.
Following the complaints, the election commissioner took the decision to postpone the elections, district election officer Munir Hossain said.
The EC also directed the Regional Election Officer of Dhaka Sarwar Mihir to submit a report after investigation.
