Stoppage of intercity trains at Panchbibi station demanded

People of Panchbibi upazila in Joypurhat district have demanded stoppage of intercity trains at Panchbibi station.

They raised the demand at a press conference at Panchbibi upazila Press Club yesterday.

Panchbibi Unnyon Forum and Alokito Paribar Unnayon Sangstha jointly arranged the conference.

Habibur Rahman, mayor of Panchbibi municipality and advisor of Panchbibi Unnayon Forum, read out the keynote paper in the press conference. Prof Motiar Rahman, convener of the forum, and other members were also present there.

Presently, several intercity trains on Dinajpur-Dhaka and Rajshahi- Khulna routes cross the Panchbibi railway station every day without stopping despite the station having all facilities, the speakers said.

They demanded stoppage of intercity trains at the station.

Bangladesh Railway authorities suspended

intercity rail connection with Panchbibi upazila in 2011 to stop smuggling because the station is close to the border.
