Two to die, four get life for killing 2 housewives

A Mymensingh court yesterday sentenced a man to death and four others to life imprisonment for killing a housewife in Muktagachha upazila in 2000.

The death penalty awardee is Abu Bakar Siddique, 55, son of Suruj Ali of Mohishtara village in the upazila

The lifers are Siddique's mother Jomirun, 75, Yunus Ali, 65, Hashem Ali, 60, and Idris Ali, 45. The court also fined the lifers Tk 5,000 each, in default they are to suffer six months more in jail, court sources said.

According to the prosecution, Abu Bakar Siddique and his mother Jomirun with the help of other convicts strangled Siddique's wife Jyotsna Ara Begum on February 18, 2000 over a family feud.

Victim's brother Joynal Abedin lodged a case with Muktagachha Police Station on the day.

After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against Siddique and four others.

After examining the record and witnesses, Sharmin Nigar, judge of the First Additional Sessions Judge's Court pronounced the verdict, court sources said.

According to a Netrakona correspondent, a court, here yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife for dowry in Kendua upazila in 2009.

The death penalty awardee is Rubel Miah, 30, son of Sharful Zaman  of Shalpa Maizhati village in the upazila.

Rubel picked up a quarrel with her wife Fatema Khatun, 22, over dowry at around 7:30pm on the day. At one stage, he hit her with a sharp weapon, leaving her dead on the spot.

Shafiqul Islam,  brother of Fatema, filed a case with Kendua  Police Station the following day, accusing Rubel. Police pressed charges against Rubel on September 29, 2009.

After examining 12 prosecution witnesses and case record, Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Abdul Hamid delivered the verdict.
