Two housewives were murdered allegedly by their husbands for dowry in Habiganj and Jessore districts on Tuesday.

A woman was burnt alive as husband allegedly set her on fire following an altercation over dowry at Teliapara village in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj on Tuesday night.

The deceased is Jinnat Akhter, 19, wife of Ripon Miah of the village, and daughter of Jafar Ali of Muradnagor village in the upazila.

Family sources said Ripon, 26, son of Abdur Nur, often tortured Jinnat for Tk 10,000 as dowry.

When Jinnat brought Tk 5,000 from her father at around 8:00pm on Tuesday, Ripon locked in an altercation with her over the issue. At one stage, he set her on fire, pouring kerosene on her body

Hearing screams, neighbours rushed to the spot, rescued Jinnat and sent her to the upazila health complex where she died at around 9:00pm.

Mollah Monir Miah, officer in-charge (OC) of Madhabpur Police Station, said Ripon went into hiding soon after the incident. Police are raiding different areas to arrest the culprit, the OC added.
