A Gaibandha court sent Mahmuda Begum, 38, a woman member of Dhaperhat Union Parishad in Sadullapur upazila of the district, to jail on charge of beating a pregnant housewife over allocation of VGD card on Wednesday afternoon.

Court Inspector of police Enamul Huq said, according to the prosecution, Mahmuda Begum received Tk 3,000 from housewife Rasheda Begum of village Gobindapur in Dhaperhat union as bribe for allocation of a VGD card.

As Mahmuda did not issue any card against Rasheda despite repeated reminders, she asked the UP member to return the money.

On June 24, Mahmuda called Rasheda to her house through village police Lakhan Sen, and beat her up severely.

Sultan Mia, husband of Rasheda Begum, filed a case against Mahmuda Begum and three others on June 30.

The defence lawyer of Mahmuda Begum filed a bail petition before Sadullapur cognisance court of Judge Moniruzzaman Sikder.

On submission of the police report in this case, the court issued arrest warrant against Mahmuda last week. She surrendered before the court on Wednesday afternoon and filed a bail petition.

On hearing, the court rejected the bail petition and sent Mahmuda to jail.
