Youth to die, 2 get life

A court here yesterday sentenced a youth to death and two other to life imprisonment for throwing acid on a schoolgirl in 2012.

The death penalty awardee is Ariful Islam, 22, of Dakkhin Babukha area in the city, while lifers are Alal Miah and Dulal Hossain of the area.
District and Sessions Judge Monjurul Bachhit also acquitted two other accused--Saddam Hossain and Arefin Siddique, as charge brought against them could not be proved.

According to the prosecution, Ariful along with his accomplices threw acid on Masuda Akhter Moni, 15, a student of Samaj Kalyan Bidyabithi School, and daughter of late Mokbul Islam of the area, on August 13 in 2012. She lost her eyesight in the acid attack.

Ariful carried out the attack as Moni refused his love proposal. 

Moni's elder brother Sohel Rana later filed a case with Rangpur Kotwali Police Station, accusing Ariful. 

After examining witnesses and evidence, the judge found the three guilty and pronounced the verdict.
