Bonna Mirza to make New York stage debut with ‘Nemesis’
Acclaimed actress Bonna Mirza is set to make her New York stage debut with “Nemesis”, a Bangla theatre production written by Masum Reza and directed by Khairul Islam Pakhi.
The first show will be staged on September 5 in New York’s Jamaica area, with two performances at 5pm and 7pm. The production is being presented by Theatre 71.
Mirza has built a strong reputation through her work in theatre and television. A longtime member of Desh Natok, she has appeared in several acclaimed stage productions and was also a familiar face on television, where she regularly performed in dramas.
Now based in the United States, Mirza said returning to theatre has brought her particular joy.
“I am happy that we are going to present a play before the audience. It is a great joy for me, especially because it is theatre. Performing on stage brings a different kind of joy,” she told The Daily Star.
She is also excited about bringing a Bangla production from Bangladesh to New York.
“The fact that a Bangla play from Bangladesh is being staged in a place like New York makes me very happy. I hope the practice of theatre and the staging of plays will continue, and I will continue to do my part,” she said.
Mirza praised both the writing and direction of “Nemesis”, describing Reza’s script as a beautiful one. Pakhi, who was associated with Dhaka Theatre for many years, has been directing the production.
Rehearsals have been underway for some time. “The audience will be able to say how much we have been able to achieve after watching the play. We are leaving no stone unturned and are doing our best,” Mirza said.
The production adds another chapter to her long association with theatre. In Dhaka, she was most recently acclaimed for her performance in the solo play “Paro”, written and directed by Reza. She also performed in “Jolbasor”.
