‘Detective Conan’ voice actress Wakana Yamazaki dies at 61
Japanese voice actress Wakana Yamazaki, best known for her role in “Detective Conan”, has died at the age of 61 after a long illness.
According to Japanese media reports, she passed away on April 18. Her agency, Aoni Production, confirmed the news in a statement released on Friday.
“Yamazaki underwent treatment for her illness but ultimately did not recover and passed away on April 18,” the agency said. It added that her funeral was held privately, attended only by family members and close relatives, in line with their wishes.
Born in 1965, Yamazaki rose to fame as the voice of Ran Mouri, a role she performed for nearly three decades. Her performance made her a familiar voice to generations of anime viewers.
She began her career in voice acting in the early 1990s after graduating from the training school of Aoni Production.
In addition to her work in “Detective Conan”, Yamazaki voiced Nojiko in “One Piece”, and also temporarily took over the role of Nami in several episodes. She was also known for voicing Ayane in the “Dead or Alive” and “Ninja Gaiden” franchises, as well as Meiko Akizuki in the 1990s series “Marmalade Boy”.
Yamazaki’s long career and memorable performances earned her a lasting place in the world of Japanese animation.
