Showbiz stars reflect on The Daily Star at 35
Over the decades, The Daily Star has grown into one of the country’s most respected English-language dailies, earning readers’ trust. Marking 35 years, the milestone reflects its credibility, loyalty, and evolution in Bangladesh’s media landscape.
While readers continue to place their expectations on the publication, members of the entertainment industry, whose stories often find a voice in its pages, also hold their own hopes for its future. Several prominent artistes shared their thoughts on what the journey of The Daily Star has meant to them, and what they wish to see in the years ahead.
Veteran actor Zahid Hasan reflected on the shifting media landscape, recalling a time when The Bangladesh Observer dominated public discourse. “Today, The Daily Star and Prothom Alo are names spoken with respect and credibility,” he said. “The Daily Star has earned the trust of its readers—that is its greatest achievement.”
He credited the newspaper’s Editor Mahfuz Anam, saying, “The newspaper’s editor, Mahfuz Anam, has led it with distinction, guiding the publication to remarkable heights for his steady leadership in guiding the paper forward.” Zahid Hasan also expressed concern over the attack on the newspaper’s office late last year, calling it deeply unfortunate. “I hope such stains never mark its journey again,” he added, extending his warm wishes on the anniversary.
Another renowned actor, Mahfuz Ahmed, echoed similar sentiments, describing The Daily Star as one of the most widely read English dailies in the country. “I am a reader myself,” he said. “Its reputation has been sustained through the capable leadership of Mahfuz Anam.”
Highlighting the paper’s role in covering cultural narratives, he added, “For those of us working in the cultural sector, The Daily Star speaks for us. It speaks of Bangladesh’s culture. I hope it continues to do so for years to come.” Condemning the attack on the office, he emphasised, “Readers are the ultimate judges, and they stand by the paper.”
For acclaimed actress Jaya Ahsan, the anniversary marks more than longevity—it represents a deep connection with readers. “To sustain 35 years with such a reputation is no small feat,” she said. “The trust it has built with its audience is truly remarkable.”
She acknowledged the publication’s consistent support for artistes, noting, “The Daily Star has always stood by us, and for that, I am grateful.” She also extended her appreciation to Mahfuz Anam, expressing hope that the newspaper continues its journey towards even greater heights.
Actress and activist Azmeri Haque Badhan emphasised the publication’s role in supporting both artistes and the broader cultural landscape. “The way The Daily Star has stood beside us, I believe it will continue to do so,” she said. “It has played an important role in our journeys as artistes.”
She expressed her hope that the paper will continue to thrive for generations, adding her voice against the earlier attack. “Such incidents should never happen again.” She concluded with heartfelt wishes for the publication’s continued success.
Meanwhile, actress Bidya Sinha Mim pointed to the newspaper’s steady rise in readership. “Its popularity did not happen overnight; it has taken years of dedication,” she observed, once again crediting the editor’s leadership.
“As someone from the film industry, I have always seen The Daily Star stand by cinema and by us,” she said. “I hope it continues to do so in the future.”
As The Daily Star celebrates 35 years, these voices from the creative community underline a shared sentiment—of trust, expectation, and a desire to see the publication continue championing culture, truth, and the stories that matter.
