Sumit's 'Master' heads to MIFF after Sydney success

Bangladeshi feature film “Master” has secured an official selection at the prestigious Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF), continuing its impressive international festival run after screening at the Sydney Film Festival.

Announcing the news on Facebook, the film's director Rezwan Shahriar Sumit said it was an honour to represent Bangladesh at two of the Asia-Pacific region's landmark film festivals back-to-back, describing the achievement as one the team "doesn't take for granted."

At MIFF, “Master” is one of only 15 films selected for the festival's Asia Pacific section, an intensely competitive strand showcasing some of the region's finest contemporary cinema.

This year's festival lineup includes internationally acclaimed filmmakers such as Pedro Almodóvar and Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, alongside emerging talents including Abinash Bikram Shah and Chuko Esiri.

“Master” will share the Asia Pacific slate with several award-winning films, including “Two Seasons, Two Strangers”, winner of the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival; “Lost Land”, recipient of the Orizzonti Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival; “AnyMart”, winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlinale; “Shape of Momo”, a double award winner at the Busan International Film Festival; “Ah Girl”, which received the Youth Jury Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival; and “We Are All Strangers”, which premiered in competition at the Berlinale.

Thanking the cast and crew, the director credited their dedication for the film's growing international journey, saying their commitment has enabled “Master” to travel across the global festival circuit.

The director also invited audiences in Melbourne to attend the film's screenings during MIFF.

The festival will begin on August 6 and run until the 23rd.
