In a tribute to legendary singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, their brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar has announced plans to build a large hospital in their memory.

The project, named the LataAsha Mangeshkar Institute of Medical Sciences, is expected to be one of the largest hospitals in Asia. It will be built on a 40-acre site in Nandoshi on Sinhagad Road. The hospital will include a 1000-bed surgical super-speciality unit and modern medical facilities.

According to Dr Dhananjay Kelkar, the Medical Director of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre, the total construction area will be around 22.5 lakh square feet. The hospital will treat both human patients and small animals.

The foundation stone was laid on April 16 at 5 pm. The event also served as a condolence meeting. It was attended by Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde, Sunetra Pawar, and Mohan Bhagwat.

Speaking about the project, Hridaynath Mangeshkar said his sisters were more than family and described them as the “very breath” of their lives.

Asha Bhosle died on April 12 at the age of 92 and was cremated with full state honours in Mumbai. She was known for her wide range of songs and long career in Indian music. She received major awards, including the Padma Vibhushan and the Maharashtra Bhushan.

Lata Mangeshkar died earlier on February 6, 2022, also at the age of 92. She was widely known as the “Nightingale of India”. She received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989 and the Bharat Ratna in 2001.
The new hospital aims to continue the sisters’ legacy by serving people through healthcare.
