Artistes gather to honour Shams Sumon at Shilpakala
A commemorative event honouring National Film Award-winning actor Shams Sumon turned into an emotional gathering as colleagues came together to remember the late artiste on Thursday (April 9) evening at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital.
Organised by the Actors’ Equity Bangladesh, the memorial brought together artistes from different generations, who gathered to pay tribute to their departed colleague.
Throughout the evening, prominent figures of the industry shared personal memories and experiences of working with Sumon. Among those present were veteran actor Mamunur Rashid, Khairul Alam Sabuj, Amirul Haque Chowdhury, Abdul Aziz, Chitralekha Guha, Azad Abul Kalam, Tauquir Ahmed, Afsana Mimi, Azizul Hakim, Arman Parvez Murad, Rawnak Hasan, Nasim, Dipa Khandakar, Rashed Mamun Apu, and Shahadat Hossain, among others.
Speakers highlighted Suman’s acting prowess, sincerity towards colleagues, and his humane qualities. Many recalled his simplicity and dedication to his craft, which left a lasting impression on those he worked with.
The audience-filled hall reflected a deeply emotional atmosphere, as the recollections allowed many to rediscover the actor through the memories shared on stage.
Shams Sumon, who made significant contributions to theatre, television, and film over a long career, passed away on March 17, 2026. His sudden demise cast a shadow of grief across the cultural arena. The event was organised to honour his memory and celebrate his legacy.
