Jolkonya’s Mother’s Day special exhibition opens in Dhaka
To mark Mother’s Day, Jolkonya has organised a six-day group art exhibition titled “Every Woman is a Mother”.
Jolkonya is a women’s organisation whose members create artworks using water-based colours and mediums.
The exhibition was inaugurated on Sunday afternoon, May 10 at Safiuddin Shilpalay in Dhanmondi by painter and sculptor Ivy Zaman and singer Mehreen. Featuring 35 artworks by 12 artists from Jolkonya, “Every Woman is a Mother” marks the collective’s tenth exhibition.
This year’s showcase includes works in watercolour alongside acrylic and coffee-based mediums.
Artist Ashok Karmaker assisted with the curation of the exhibition, while The City Bank PLC served as the title sponsor.
According to a press release, the exhibition was jointly inaugurated by Ivy Zaman and Mehreen.
The opening ceremony was divided into two segments. The first included speeches marking Mother’s Day, along with gift presentations for the guests and all artists of Jolkonya. The second segment featured the ceremonial lighting of lamps.
Curator Ashok Karmaker said that each Jolkonya exhibition carries a unique character. Referring to the exhibition titled “Every Woman is a Mother”, he praised the participating mothers for creating artworks and organising exhibitions alongside fulfilling their everyday responsibilities.
Singer Mehreen said, “I am a mother, and I also have a mother of my own. I carry many memories as a mother. In one lifetime, if we follow our mother’s guidance, nothing else is needed. The key to heaven lies in a mother’s hands.”
Painter and sculptor Ivy Zaman said, “Mother’s Day is not limited to just one special day — every day is Mother’s Day. The Earth itself is my mother; this soil is my mother. I applaud the women of Jalkanya for taking part in this exhibition while fulfilling all their responsibilities as mothers.”
Suporna Alice Gomes, founder of Jolkonya, said, “Motherhood is a state of consciousness. A girl begins to develop a sense of motherhood from adolescence, as her body undergoes changes. Giving birth alone does not make someone a mother. There are many women in the world who abandon their children, considering them illegitimate. To truly be a mother, one must possess maternal compassion. That is why I believe every woman embodies a mother.”
The programme was hosted and presented by Suporna Alice Gomes.
The participating artists in the exhibition are Suporna Alice Gomes, Sabia Nasrin, Elina Chakma, Mahfuza Khanam, Jacqueline Ria Rosario, Shama Sayom, Ernestina Papiya Gomez, Dipanwita Mohaldar, Israt Binte Rouf, Salsabil Sultana, Zeenatul Kubra Nipa, and Sylvia Teresa Costa.
The exhibition will continue until Friday (May 15). Visitors can explore the exhibition daily from 11 am to 8 pm.
