‘Bhooter Bhabishyat’ director Anik Dutta passes away
Bengali film director Anik Dutta passed away today at a private hospital in South Kolkata, according to reports by Anandabazar. He was 66.
Reports stated by Anandaazar revealed that the filmmaker suffered serious injuries after falling from the roof of his residence in Hindustan Park today. He was rushed to a hospital near Dhakuria in critical condition, where he later died. His body is expected to undergo a post-mortem examination. As of now, police have not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
Dutta began his directorial journey in 2012 with "Bhooter Bhabishyat", a satirical fantasy drama featuring an ensemble cast including Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, Swastika Mukherjee and Paran Bandopadhyay. Upon release, the film became both a commercial and critical success and established him as one of the notable voices in contemporary Bengali cinema.
Over the years, Dutta became known for blending satire, nostalgia and social commentary in his storytelling. His notable filmography also includes "Ashchorjyo Prodeep", "Meghnad Badh Rahasya", "Borunbabur Bondhu", and "Abar Basanta Bilap".
Among his most acclaimed works, "Aparajito", starring Jeetu Kamal, drew widespread attention for recreating the journey of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray during the making of “Pather Panchali”. The film explored not only Ray’s artistic brilliance but also the struggles and persistence behind creating one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated works.
Last year, Dutta released "Joto Kando Kolkatatei", starring Abir Chatterjee and Bangladeshi actress Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed.
An ardent admirer of Satyajit Ray, Dutta’s films frequently reflected the legendary filmmaker’s influence through their visual language, humour and storytelling approach. Many of his works carried subtle tributes to Ray’s cinematic style while maintaining Dutta’s own distinct voice in Bengali cinema.
