Hall owners seek compensation over ‘Prince’ screening issues

Cinema hall owners have demanded compensation from the producer of “Prince”, alleging losses after the Shakib Khan-starrer failed to meet expectations and could not be screened on Eid day due to technical issues.

According to exhibitors, more than 50 halls were unable to run the film despite selling tickets, reportedly due to server-related problems. The situation led to unrest in several cinemas, with incidents of vandalism causing further losses for hall owners.

The Bangladesh Film Exhibitors Association held a meeting on Wednesday (April 1) to address the issue, attended by producer Shirin Sultana. Association president Awlad Hossain Ujjal said the producer must take responsibility for the losses.

“The losses incurred by hall owners must be compensated by the producer. However, we stand by the producer as well. There may have been a conspiracy, but the reasons behind the disruption must be clarified,” he said, adding that a decision would be taken after determining the source of the problem.

Ujjal also noted that Shakib Khan bears responsibility for the situation. “As a superstar, it is his duty to ensure the film is ready before release. If shooting continues until just before Eid, how can audiences expect a proper screening?” he said.

The association has called for the government to oversee cinema server systems to prevent similar issues in the future. “The server system should be managed under BFDC rather than by individuals. A government-run system could help avoid such disruptions,” Ujjal added.

Exhibitors also proposed that films intended for Eid release be submitted to the Film Certification Board at least 15 days in advance. This would allow sufficient time for evaluation and promotion.

Meanwhile, questions have been raised over how the film received certification despite incomplete production. At a special screening on March 31, Shakib Khan said filming continued until the day before Eid.

Film Certification Board Vice Chairman Abdur Rahman said a notice would be issued to the producer seeking an explanation. “We are concerned by this incident. A notice has been signed and will be sent. We will review their response,” he said.
