Singer Nancy states position in upcoming referendum
On the eve of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, which will be held alongside a nationwide referendum, National Film Award-winning singer Nazmun Munira Nancy has publicly stated that she supports the “No” vote.
In a Facebook post shared on Wednesday, the singer clarified her stance ahead of the vote, which offers citizens the option to choose either “Yes” or “No”.
Responding to a question about the reasoning behind her position, Nancy said she does not agree with all the points included under the “Yes” option. She added that the issues should have been presented separately. According to her, the public should have been clearly informed about the implications of both outcomes.
“They have mainly promoted that a ‘Yes’ vote would uphold the spirit of July,” she said, questioning who defines that spirit. “July does not belong to any one group,” she added, noting that since the “No” option exists, she has chosen it.
Addressing criticism she received online, Nancy said many of the negative comments came from anonymous social media profiles. She stated that she does not consider such remarks significant and that she values opinions from individuals who publicly identify themselves.
The singer also raised concerns about what she described as an increase in online harassment. She said that while disagreement is natural, abusive language and personal attacks have intensified in recent times.
Nancy had previously expressed her stance in an earlier Facebook post, where she questioned the purpose and presentation of the referendum. Reiterating her position, she said that when both “Yes” and “No” options are available, citizens should be free to choose without pressure. “If both options are there, people should be allowed to exercise their democratic right freely,” she said.
