The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) today said a low-pressure system may develop over the south Bay of Bengal on May 7, which may intensify later.

The matter is being monitored closely, said a notification from BMD's Storm Warning Centre.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal around May 6 and a low-pressure area may form in the same region under its influence in the subsequent 48 hours.

The IMD in its latest update said the cyclonic circulation is likely to concentrate into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal on May 8.

It said the depression may intensify and may move northward toward the central Bay of Bengal, adding that the details of its path will be given after the formation of the low-pressure area.

"Some models are suggesting that it would be a cyclone," said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, IMD's director general of meteorology.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik yesterday chaired a high-level meeting to review the state's preparedness to deal with the cyclone.
