Ex-Ducsu VP Noor alleges attempt on his life
Former Ducsu VP Nurul Haque Nur yesterday alleged that an attempt was made on his life by running him over with a car in the capital's Malibagh area on Wednesday night when he was on his way home.
He further alleged that the vehicle was owned by a secretary. It had a sticker of the Parliament Secretariat on its windshield and a pass sticker from the home ministry.
Speaking at a press conference at Zaman Tower in the city's Paltan yesterday, Nur said a car (Dhaka Metro GA-31-6508) was following him and his party men around 11:00pm on Wednesday when they were coming down the Moghbazar-Mouchak Flyover on their way home to Badda.
"I always ride a motorcycle driven by my younger brother. As it was late on Wednesday night and the lights were off on the flyover, I didn't feel safe. I called an Uber while my brother and a few members of my party [Gono Odhikar Porishad] were on motorbikes," Nur said.
The former student leader said the car tried twice to hit his brother Aminul Islam's motorcycle, but the latter somehow managed to avoid a collision with the vehicle.
After a while, the car rear-ended a bus in front of Abul Hotel on DIT Road. Two men, who seemed to be tense at that time, were in the car, Nur said.
The car driver then put the vehicle on reverse and tried to hit Aminul's motorcycle again, the former Ducsu leader alleged.
He said his party men Shakil Uz Zaman and Sohrab Hossain witnessed the incident from another motorbike behind.
Sohrab said, "When I asked the driver about his personal information, he introduced himself as Khandaker Sabbir Ahmed. He said the car belonged to a secretary's son. The car had a secretariat sticker on its windshield."
Nur said he was feeling insecure following the incident. He demanded the authorities ensure his security and also of his party leaders.
He alleged that police went to the spot, came to know about the owner of the vehicle and let the two car passengers go without taking any action.
He said he lodged a complaint with Hatirjheel Police Station around 4:00am yesterday.
"So far I have come under attack 11 times, including the one at Ducsu Bhaban, from goons blessed by the ruling party. We were badly injured in that attack and many of us were hospitalised. However, a police investigation found that it was a scuffle between two groups of people."
He alleged that police were reluctant to record a general diary in connection with Wednesday's incident. He urged the law enforcers to check the CCTV footage from the area.
Harun-Ur-Rashid, deputy commissioner (Tejgaon Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said their probe found that Nur's allegations were not true.
"We tracked Nur's mobile phone and found that he was not at that spot during the incident. The car hit the bus accidentally after its driver lost control. The driver was injured in the incident," he told The Daily Star.
