'Have to be at our best'
India seem to be the team in form in the ICC World Twenty20, having comprehensively won both their Group 2 matches, against archrivals Pakistan and defending champions West Indies. Somewhat surprisingly, their success has been built on their bowling, a department that has often been singled out as a weakness.
Today they face the team who are arguably the most beleaguered of the ten remaining. Hosts Bangladesh have not had an easy time of it, failing to last 20 overs against West Indies and Hong Kong. Notwithstanding their opponents' frailty, India opener Rohit Sharma believes that his team should focus on their recent trend of improving in all three departments, and let the externals take care of themselves.
"We will be going with the same approach as before and we want to keep it simple. We know what we need to do to win this game," said the stylish opener in the pre-match press conference in Mirpur yesterday. "All three departments would be crucial and I am sure individuals are working on whatever areas they need to. It is an important game playing Bangladesh, obviously they will be getting a lot of support at their home ground and we have to be at our best to win the match."
Another interesting sub-plot is that both the teams may have other things on their minds. While Bangladesh have troubles stemming from three months of non-performance, back in India there is much IPL-related turmoil. "Not at all," Rohit said when asked whether that was a distraction. "I said the focus is on the T20 World Cup, it's an important tournament for us.
"As I said tomorrow's [Friday's] game would be crucial and we want to win that and take things from there. Definitely this is the best chance for us to qualify for the semifinals."
Another matter of interest surrounding the Indian team is whether Yuvraj Singh can regain the form that once made him one of the most feared T20 batsmen. "The type of batsman Yuvraj is he just needs one good innings and if he gets that he will get the confidence. I hope it comes tomorrow and it will be good for us if he returns to form."
