Meg Lanning has a penchant for breaking records. At the age of 18, she became Australia's youngest ever centurion -- male or female -- beating Ricky Ponting's previous record of 21 years and 21 days. The recently-made captain of the Australian women's side never looked back since, scoring tons of runs in all formats of the game.
Yesterday at the Sylhet Cricket Stadium Lanning set a new record -- the highest T20I score in women's cricket as she plundered 126 off just 65 balls against Ireland -- beating the previous best score of 116 not out held by Shandre Fritz of South Africa.
Lanning's colossal knock, with 18 fours and four sixes, helped Australia post a huge total of 191 for four and set up a comprehensive 78-run victory over the Irish in their Group A encounter of the Women's World Twenty20.
Lanning later said she wasn't thinking about the records, just making use of a good batting track. She was severe on all the Irish bowlers and as she smacked 18 fours and four towering sixes -- to almost every corner of the ground.
Ireland's chase never got enough pace and they kept losing wickets while the required rate kept climbing and eventually ended on 113 for seven.
In the second match, Suzie Bates smashed an unbeaten 94 off just 61 balls as New Zealand amassed 167 for three, before restricting Pakistan to 108 for seven to effect a 59-run victory and all but ensure their semifinal berth.
