Shah Hannan's comment
I am a freedom fighter living in the United Kingdom for the last 36 years but my heart and mind are always for the betterment of Bangladesh.
I am disappointed to read from the articles published in your daily about Mr. Shah A Hannan's (ex secretary and former Islami Bank chairman) various comments regarding the liberation war in a talk show.
In my view if proper action was taken against the collaborators of the Pakistanis after the liberation, then people like Mr. Shah Hannan or Mr. Mojaheed, the Jamaat secretary, would not have been able to make such unacceptable comments.
I blame all successive governments who have given the opportunity to people like Mojaheed & Hannan for making political gains. Neither the Awami League nor the BNP has taken any steps to brought the Pakistani collaborators to book. Furthermore, the BNP has promoted the Jamaat during the last five years of their alliance, hence these people have the audacity to claim that there are no war criminals in Bangladesh.
As for the Awami League, they are not innocent either. Perhaps I should mention that they also sat down with the Jamaat in the past for making political gains against their ideology. More recently, the AL president, without discussing with other senior leaders, formed an alliance with such forces. She even gave nomination to such a candidate in a Sylhet constituency in place of a very honest central leader of her party. The AL is now complaining about the Jamaat and want the EC to ban the party from the forthcoming election, but the question remains why they did not do it while they were in power.
Both the BNP and the Awami League tried in the past to distort the true story of the liberation war. The BNP is not willing to accept Bangabandhu as the father of the nation. The Awami League is also not willing to recognise the contribution of General Osmany or the other sector commanders (including late President Zia), unless they are associated with the party.
Time has come now for all pro-liberation forces to unite and to persuade the present independent caretaker government to take formal legal action against these collaborators. If the pro-liberation people are not united now and fail to do something about it, I am afraid when our generation is not around, the true story of the liberation war will be completely distorted.
I am pleased to hear from the electronic media that the 1971 sector commanders have taken an initiative to hold a rally before 16 December 2007 to highlight the true story of the liberation war. I sincerely hope all pro-liberation political leaders will cooperate with them with an open mind for the success of the initiative.
I pray to the Almighty for the success of this noble cause and save our nation from the conspiracy.
