Housewife burnt to death for dowry

A housewife was burn to death on Tuesday allegedly by the family members of her husband for dowry at village Monipur under Burichang upazila. Quoting locals police said, Shapna Rani Shil, daughter of Anil Chandra Shil was married to Lakkhan Chandra Shil, son of Sukumar Chandra Shil two years ago. She was often tortured by the husband and his family members as her parents could not meet the dowry demand. Shapna's family sources said, they paid TK 1,40,000 in two installments to the greedy husband. Neighbours said on the fateful night Lakkhan and his brother, sister and mother pressed her to bring more money from her parents. As she refused, they poured kerosene on her body and set her ablaze. Shapna was rushed to upazila health complex. Later, she was shifted to Comilla Medical College and Hospital where she died in the evening. A case was filed but none could be arrested as all members of Skumar Chandra Shil's family went into hiding after the incident.
