<i>Bet costs his life</i>

A student of Barisal BM College yesterday met his tragic end while swimming in the college pond in jeans pants upon a bet. The victim, Kazi Jasimuddin Sajib, 19, was an honours first year history department student of BM College, and son of Abdul Khalek Master of Nishanbaria in Naltona union of Barguna district. While observing fast, he accepted a Tk 100 bet for crossing the 120 metre-long pond in front of Jibanananda Das Hostel on the campus wearing jeans pant, witnesses said. He started swimming to cross the pond at about 11:30am but went under the surface of water after crossing half of the pond. Informed by watchers, the college authorities immediately called Fire Service men who raised Sajib from the pond. Sajib was taken to hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead at about 12:30pm.
