17 get interim bail in police assault case

The High Court on Wednesday granted four months' interim bail for Sylhet City BNP Joint Convener Shamsuzzaman, district JCD Vice-president Abdul Ahad Khan Zamal and 15 others in the police assault case filed against 150 people after Friday's clashes between rival factions of the JCD. A faction of local JCD attacked the rally of their party rivals at a community centre in the city's Upashahar area on Friday evening. About 30 people were injured during the clash that spread afterwards. JCD men also vandalised four cars and motorbikes and attacked a few houses. Police charged baton to disperse the clashing JCD activists at Mirabazar in the city and arrested 27 people. A few policemen also sustained minor wounds in the incident. Sylhet Kotwali Police in the night of incident filed a case against 150 leaders and activists of BNP and JCD including 52 named ones on charge of assaulting police.
