Alal acquitted of extortion charges

A Barisal court yesterday acquitted Jubo Dal secretary and former lawmaker Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal of the charges of extortion. Md Shahidullah, district and sessions judge of Barisal gave the verdict in presence of the accused. The judge acquitted the accused of charges as the complainant gave up before charge framing and the prosecution failed to produce any witness or evidence to support the charges. Court sources said, contractor Kazi Mahbubul Alam lodged a case against Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, former BNP lawmaker of Barisal-2 constituency, with Uzirpur police station on April 24, 2007. In the case, the complainant alleged that Alal took Tk1,70,000 as 10--15 per cent commission from him for giving work under post flood reconstruction and rehabilitation and other projects on February 22, 2006.
