AL leader killed in Netrakona clash

An Awami League leader was killed and 25 others were injured in a clash over land dispute at Nayakpur village under Madan upazila of the district yesterday morning. The dead, Menu Mia, 45, was the vice president of Awami League Nayakpur union unit. Locals and police said Menu Mia and Nuruddin Haji of Nayakpur village had a long-standing dispute over the ownership of a land at the village. When Nuruddin and his men tried to capture the land in the morning, the supporters of Menu Mia counter-attacked them. Both sides used lethal weapons during the clash that continued for three hours. Menu Mia was killed on the spot and 25 others from the clashing groups were injured. Of the injured, Sayedur Rahman, Bakki Khan, Abu Mia, Mostafa Khan, Rukan Khan, Habi Khan, Humayan Kabir, Mazharul Islam were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital while the rest to Madan Upazila Health Complex. On information, police rushed to the spot, dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control. Police have been deployed at the village as a tens situation is prevailing there. A murder case was filed Madan Police Station at noon. Police arrested eight people, including Nuruddin Haji, in the afternoon.
