Trial of liberation war criminals
While the caretaker government is already overloaded & stressed with many national problems, such as holding a free, fair & credible election, curving wide spread corruption, control spiraling prices of essential commodities, separation of judiciary from executive etc, suddenly a new problem crept in from the irresponsible statement of Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed about their well known role in our liberation war. No doubt his comment deserves strong condemnation that is already pouring in from all quarters and probably Mr. Ali Ahsan is passing a hard time to digest these.
But why we are demanding banning all the religion-bases political parties from doing politics? Moreover, we are making this demand to the CTG whose prime responsibility is to present the country with a democratic government elected through a free, fair & credible election. In a democratic society all people, secular or religious, have the same & equal right to practice politics.
The Election Commission is working hard to make laws to bar all criminals (including those of liberation wars) from taking part in the general election and if people are able to exercise their voting rights in a free & fair process then the bad elements will be automatically screened out. Besides, the job of arranging trials for the liberation war criminals, either in normal courts or in special tribunals, can be given to the next elected government. We have waited 36 years and can wait for another 2/3 years. But it is not the appropriate time now to put forward this demand. This will only make the primary tasks of CTG complicated and national unity will be dented. But if we believe that an elected political government, like the past ones, can not take any action against liberation war criminals, then we better allow the incumbent CTG to stay in state power for three more years and solve our vital national problems so that the next elected political governments can just rule the country peacefully!
