Buyers assaulted for protesting price hike

Three buyers were injured as sugar traders attacked them for protesting sugar price hike at Banshtala Bazar in Kaliganj upazila yesterday. The injured are Sumon Sardar, 28, and Khalil Sardar, 29, of Nilkanthapur village and Kamal Sardar, 25, of Fatepur village in the upazila. They are now undergoing treatment at Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex. Police quoted local people as saying that the victimsSumon, Khalil and Kamalwent to Shafiq's shop at around 11:00am to buy sugar. As Shafiq charged Tk 70 per kg, they engaged in an altercation with him. At one stage, Shafiq and some other traders swooped on the three buyers, leaving then seriously injured. Khalil Sardar, one of the buyers, filed a case with Kaliganj Police Station accusing sugar traders Shafiqul Islam, Nur Islam, Rabiul Islam, Sirajul Islam and three others of assaulting them. Police arrested Shafiqul and Rabiul while the rest are absconding. When contacted, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station said they are looking for other accused in the case.
