Police attacked to snatch girl rescued from abductors

A group of people on Monday attacked a police station, clashed with the law enforcers in a bid to snatch a teenage girl rescued from abductors in Lalmohan upazila under Bhola district. During the one and a half hours long battle, the mob hurled brickbats at Lalmohan police station. At least 11 people were injured by police baton charge. Sources said, Bristi, 14, a class nine student and daughter of Babul, a sweeper of Chandgao police station under Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) was abducted from her house on August 12, 2009. Babul lodged a case in this connection with Chandgao police on September 9. Zakir Hossain Fakir, officer in-charge (OC) of Lalmohan police station told The Daily Star that they rescued the girl on Monday from Dakkhin Chachra Shikdar Para under Dholi Gournagor. But some locals tried to snatch the girl from police claiming that she was married to one Abdul Karim and living a peaceful conjugal life. Ziauddin Sharon, brother of local AL lawmaker said the underage girl fled home with her husband Karim. He said locals became agitated because of police interference. However, he helped police to recover the girl as she was underage, he added. S N Nazrul Islam, Bhola superintendent of police (SP) told this correspondent over phone that the girl would be handed over to SI Aminur Rasul, investigation officer of the abduction case, after being produced in the court.
