Outlaw injured in shootout, another jailed
An outlaw was injured in a shootout with Rab while another was sentenced to jail on Wednesday.
Injured outlaw Habibur Rahman Mithu, 32, was a 'regional leader' of outlawed Sarbahara Party's Kamrul group and at the same time president of Agorpur union Jubo League under Babuganj upazila.
Sources in Rab-8 said, on a tip off that a meeting of the regional Sarbahara leaders and cadres was in progress at Sharikal school ground in Gournadi upazila adjacent to Agorpur union of Babuganj.
The law enforcers raided the place and challenged the outlaws at about 10:30 pm. Instantly they opened fire at Rab men but retreated after 8 to 10 minutes of gun fight. During the shootout, Mithu was injured after being hit in right leg. After the incident, a country-made gun and three bullets were recovered from the spot.
Meanwhile, a trial court on Wednesday sentenced Kamrul Ahsan Himu, a 'regional leader' of Sarbahara Zia group and former chairman of Agorpur Union Parishad of Babuganj upazila under Barisal district, to 17 years rigorous imprisonment (RI).
According to the prosecution story, a team of Rapid Action Battalion arrested Himu from Agorpur bazaar and recovered a pipe gun with four bullets on January 19, 2008.
Sher-e-Gul, deputy assistant director of Rab-8, as complainant lodged a case with Babuganj police station the next day.
Sub Inspector Abdul Majid, investigation officer of the case, filed charge sheet against the lone accused on February 10 of the same year.
